Mission Statement
In fulfillment of our Mission, the American Legion adheres to the following purposes: To support and advocate for veterans, active military and their families. To support the initiatives and programs of The American Legion. To foster patriotism and responsible citizenship.

In 1919, the American Legion was born as war-weary veterans returned home from World War I’s battlefields. The patriotic veterans’ organization was granted a charter by Congress in 1919. Since that time, the organization has been dedicated to mutual helpfulness.
American Legion posts look to serve their community by mentoring youth, advocating patriotism and helping veterans. Over its history, the American Legion has worked to protect veterans.
The organization played a role in the development in the Veterans Bureau, the forerunner of the Veterans Administration, lobbied for the GI Bill and the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and supports several programs to help veterans and their families.
The American Legion runs the American Legion Baseball league, one the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs. The local team is the Columbia Gorge Hustlers.
When founded, the organization had 1 million members. Today, the organization has over 2 million members in 13,000 posts worldwide.
